what we do

How it works

I have learned so much from Rachel, as a voice student and more. The barbershop style was intimidating to me, coming from a choral background, but what I learned from her made me a better Sweet Ad, and a better singer overall.

FAQs

What can I expect from the free consultation?

Your free consultation is your chance to get excited about voice lessons! We’ll chat about your goals, answer all your pressing questions, and help you feel confident about getting started. You’ll also get to know your instructor, Rachel, and get a sense of how lessons work. It’s a no-pressure, fun way to see if SPARK! is the right fit for you!

Should I take online lessons or in-person lessons?

It depends on what works best for you! We’re based in East Renton, WA, so if you’re nearby and prefer in-person lessons, that’s an option—especially for children, who often benefit from in-person interaction.

That said, online lessons through Zoom work really well! We will adjust the sound settings to optimize audio quality, and you can take lessons from anywhere—no need to live close or even be in the same time zone. Online lessons are a great option for flexibility and convenience while still getting personalized coaching.

What happens if I can’t make my lesson?

If you don’t show up without notice, the lesson will still be charged. However, if you let us know at least 24 hours in advance, we will reschedule. Life happens—we just ask for a little notice so we can make the most of your time!

Is SPARK! right for me?

If you love barbershop singing—whether you’re brand new or an experienced singer—SPARK! is for you! I work with singers of all levels to help build confidence, improve technique, and make singing more fun and rewarding. If you’re part of a chorus, a quartet, or just curious about barbershop, I’d love to help you grow your skills!

Do I need any prior experience to take lessons?

No prior experience is necessary! Whether you’re brand new to singing or have been part of a chorus or quartet for years, lessons are tailored to your skill level and goals. Our goal is to help you feel confident and excited about your voice, no matter where you’re starting from.

Do I need a fancy microphone to do online lessons?

Nope! The built-in microphone on your computer or device is usually enough for lessons. However, if you’d like to upgrade to a higher-quality mic for better sound clarity, check out the shop for our recommended options.

Can I take lessons if I don’t sing barbershop?

Yes! While I specialize in barbershop, I also teach jazz, pop, rock, classical, and more. No matter your style, we’ll focus on building a strong, healthy vocal technique that helps you sing with confidence.

Do you offer coaching for quartets and/or choruses?

Yes, we offer coaching for quartets! If you’re looking to improve harmony, performance, or technique as a group, feel free to reach out for more information and pricing.

What should I expect in my first lesson?

We’ll start with a quick tech check to make sure our Zoom sound is working correctly. Then, we’ll have a brief goal-setting session to make sure we’re on the same page about what you want to work on. After that, we’ll dive into a song—feel free to have something in mind! As we work through the song, we’ll focus on building vocal skills that you can apply to other pieces. We’ll take notes for you, so you can focus on learning. The lesson will end with a quick check-in to see how things went and to answer any questions you may have.

How do I pay for lessons?

We offer several payment options for your convenience, including Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, cash, card, check, or any other agreed-upon method. Just let us know what works best for you!

Do you offer trial lessons?

While we offer monthly packages, we’d be happy to let you try us out for a lesson or two before committing. Just reach out using the contact form, or let us know during your free consultation, and we’ll set something up!

Can I record my lessons?

By default, lessons are not recorded. However, if you’d like to record a session, just discuss it with us ahead of time, and we’ll be happy to accommodate!

Do you work with people who think they “can’t sing”?

Absolutely! If you’ve been told you’re “tone deaf” or feel like you can’t match pitch, don’t worry—pitch matching is a skill like any other, and it can be learned with practice. We can help you develop your ear and your voice so you can sing with confidence!

What if I have vocal fatigue or strain?

Let’s talk about it! We’ll work together to make sure you’re singing in a healthy, sustainable way. If something doesn’t feel right, we can assess what might be causing the issue and adjust your technique. You shouldn’t experience pain or severe fatigue after singing, even for several hours—if you do, we’ll find ways to help you sing with more ease and efficiency.

How do I prepare for each lesson?

Sing through the songs you plan to work on and review any notes from your previous lesson, which you can access through the Practice Space app. We’ll ask if there’s anything specific you’d like to focus on, so it helps to have that in mind ahead of time. Find a relatively quiet place for your session, and make sure to have your music and a pencil nearby.
